How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

shutterstock_113824207With proper care, the results of teeth whitening treatment can last up to one or more years for many patients. Extending the length of time that your results last is dependent upon following post-whitening instructions and performing periodic touch-up treatments. Our dentist, Thomas J. Strub, DDS, recommends adhering to the following guidelines to keep your newly whitened teeth bright and stain-free:

  • Practice good oral hygiene – regular brushing, flossing, and cleanings
  • Avoiding foods, beverages, and substances that have a tendency to stain the teeth
  • Immediately brush after consuming staining foods
  • When possible, use a straw for drinking staining beverages – this way, liquids bypass the teeth when entering the mouth
  • Use a whitening toothpaste and mouthwash – active ingredients in these products may help remove and prevent staining
  • Use an electric toothbrush to clean teeth
  • Refrain from smoking

Over time, you may notice the whiteness of your teeth fading or stains developing. Depending on how rapidly this occurs, you may want to apply a touch up treatment every three to six months. For the whitening system that we offer at our practice, we have custom whitening trays created for you, which you use to perform whitening treatments at home. These same trays and the bleaching gel can be applied as needed to extend the life of your bright white smile. Often, patients stock up on more whitening gel for maintenance treatments when they return to our office for cleanings.
